Trump Heads to Putin Meeting, Says Ukraine Talks Not on His AgendaTrump Heads to Putin Meeting, Says Ukraine Talks Not on His Agenda

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has boarded a flight to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin, declaring that he is “not here to negotiate for Ukraine,” in remarks that are likely to fuel debate over his foreign policy intentions.

Speaking to reporters before departure from a private airfield in Florida, Trump said the meeting was focused on “America’s interests” and dismissed speculation that he would act as an informal mediator in the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict.

“I’m going to have a very direct conversation with President Putin. This is about the United States, our security, our economy, and our future. I’m not here to cut deals for Ukraine — that’s for their leaders to decide,” Trump said.

The trip, which has not been officially coordinated with the Biden administration, comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Moscow. Current U.S. officials have distanced themselves from the meeting, stressing that Trump does not represent the government’s position.

Kremlin sources have confirmed the talks will take place in a closed-door setting, but have not disclosed the specific agenda. Russian media have framed the meeting as an opportunity to “reset” dialogue with a figure who, during his presidency, maintained a less confrontational approach toward Moscow than his successor.

Critics in Washington have warned that the encounter could be exploited by the Kremlin for political leverage. Democratic lawmakers accused Trump of undermining U.S. foreign policy, while some Republicans defended the move as “private diplomacy” that could ease tensions.

International observers say the optics of the meeting and Trump’s refusal to link it to Ukraine’s war effort could send a complex message to allies, especially in Europe, where unity against Russian aggression remains a key strategic goal.

Trump, however, appeared unfazed by the criticism. “I always do what’s right for America,” he told reporters before boarding. “We’ll see what happens.”
