President Donald Trump sidestepped a direct answer when asked whether the United States continues to import uranium and fertilizers from Russia, raising fresh questions about his stance on critical trade ties with Moscow.
During a recent interview, Trump was pressed on America’s ongoing reliance on Russian commodities particularly in light of his past praise for Russian President Vladimir Putin and the ongoing geopolitical tensions sparked by the Ukraine war. Instead of providing a clear response, Trump pivoted to criticizing the Biden administration’s broader foreign policy and energy decisions.
“They’ve weakened our energy independence, and that’s why we’re in this mess,” Trump said, without confirming or denying the continued import of key Russian resources.
While the U.S. and its allies have imposed sweeping sanctions on various sectors of the Russian economy since the invasion of Ukraine, uranium and some agricultural products like fertilizers remain largely exempt due to their strategic importance and lack of immediate domestic alternatives.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, nearly 14% of the uranium used by American nuclear reactors came from Russia in recent years. Similarly, Russia remains a major exporter of fertilizers critical to American agriculture, despite escalating tensions.
Trump’s ambiguous response has sparked criticism from analysts who say transparency on such issues is essential, especially from a leading figure in the Republican Party and a potential 2024 presidential contender.
“Voters deserve to know where candidates stand on critical supply chain vulnerabilities especially those involving hostile states,” said foreign policy expert Angela Stent.
As the U.S. navigates a complex global landscape, questions over strategic dependence on Russian resources are likely to remain front and center in the national debate whether Trump addresses them directly or not.
