Tragedy Strikes as Under-Construction Railway Bridge Collapses in Mizoram: 18 Dead, 3 Rescued

A devastating incident unfolded in Mizoram’s Aizawl district as an under-construction railway bridge collapsed, claiming 18 lives and leaving 3 individuals injured. The National Disaster Relief Force and Quick Response Team raced against time to recover bodies and rescue survivors from the wreckage.

The tragedy struck near Sairang village, approximately 21 kilometers from the district headquarters Aizawl, around 9:30 AM. The rescue operation spanned several hours, with dedicated efforts from various teams.

A statement issued on Wednesday indicated that the postmortem procedures were being conducted by a joint team from Zoram Medical College (ZMC) and Civil Hospital, Aizawl. The statement explained, “The bodies will be embalmed and will be handed over to the railway department for transportation to respective home villages.”

Amid the grim situation, a glimmer of hope emerged as rescue teams successfully saved an injured worker from the heights of one of the bridge pillars. Two Quick Response Team officials, Lalhriatzuala and Lalfakzuala, showcased exceptional courage by rappelling down a 100-meter high pillar to bring the worker to safety.

With coordination between Border Security Force (BSF), National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF), and the local police, rescue operations persisted. Medical teams from Civil Hospital, Lengpui, and Sairang Primary Health Center extended crucial medical aid. The Young Mizo Association (YMA) also played a vital role in the ongoing rescue efforts.

Offering support in the face of tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister Relief Fund for the families of the deceased. Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw followed suit, providing an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for each victim’s kin.

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga conveyed his condolences, expressing deep sorrow and empathy for the affected families. The Railways authorities took immediate action by forming a high-level committee to investigate the cause behind the bridge collapse, aiming to ascertain the factors leading to this unfortunate event.
