In a gesture of mourning, traders in Mayiladuthurai district observed a two-hour closure of their shops to pay tribute to the late Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) leader, Vijayakanth. The actor and political figure passed away in Chennai at the age of 71 after contracting COVID-19.
Actor Rajinikanth expressed his grief at Island Ground in Chennai’s Anna Salai, stating, “We will never get a person as good as Vijayakanth. In politics and cinema, there is no one like him. This loss is irreplaceable.” The mortal remains of Vijayakanth were brought to Island Ground for public homage, with a silent procession by DMDK cadres in Kancheepuram.
The final rites will be conducted at the Koyambedu DMDK office, preceded by a visit to the Koyambedu office. DMDK founder Vijayakanth, widely known as ‘Captain,’ had a significant impact on both the film industry and politics. His contributions to the South Indian film industry and his two terms in the Legislative Assembly marked a distinguished career. He was admitted to MIOT Hospital in Chennai in November due to health issues related to coughing and throat pain. Despite medical attention, he succumbed to the illness.
