Supreme Court Questions Bihar Government’s Caste Survey Release, Delays Action

Why Did You Release Caste Survey Data?” Supreme Court Questions Bihar Government, Defers Action The Supreme Court, led by Justices Sanjeev Khanna and SVN Bhatti, has issued a notice in response to multiple petitions challenging the caste survey conducted by the Bihar Government. Expressing the need for thorough consideration, the bench asked the counsel representing Bihar, “…but why did you publish this?”

Senior Advocate Shyam Divan, representing the state, explained that the decision to release the data was based on the court’s prior indication that it would determine whether to issue a notice in the case.

The bench, which refrained from issuing any restraining order, stated that it would assess the state government’s authority to conduct the survey. Justice Khanna remarked, “We are not staying anything at this moment. Let them file a counter.” The court is set to revisit the matter in January 2024.
