Former India fast bowler S. Sreesanth has taken his long-running dispute with Indian Premier League franchise Rajasthan Royals to the Supreme Court, escalating a battle over an insurance claim linked to his suspension from cricket.
The controversy stems from the aftermath of the 2013 spot-fixing scandal, which saw Sreesanth banned for life by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Although the ban was later overturned, the cricketer has argued that Rajasthan Royals failed to honour an insurance policy intended to protect players against earnings lost due to unforeseen circumstances.
According to Sreesanth, the policy should have provided compensation during the years he was barred from playing professional cricket. The former pacer alleges the franchise and its insurers neglected their contractual obligations, leaving him without financial support at a time when his career and reputation were in turmoil.
“I lost the best years of my cricketing life, and the insurance was supposed to safeguard against exactly this kind of situation,” Sreesanth said in a statement. “All I want is what is rightfully mine.”
Rajasthan Royals, however, maintain that the claim is without merit, arguing that the suspension resulted from disciplinary action rather than injury or accident, conditions typically covered by such policies. Legal representatives for the franchise have indicated they will contest the case vigorously.
The dispute has already passed through lower courts before reaching the Supreme Court, where justices will now decide whether Sreesanth’s claim has standing under the terms of the policy. Legal experts say the outcome could set a precedent for how sports insurance contracts are interpreted in India, particularly in cases involving bans or disciplinary action.
Sreesanth, once a fiery presence in India’s bowling attack and a two-time World Cup winner, has largely shifted away from cricket in recent years, exploring television, film, and commentary roles. Still, he has remained outspoken about the challenges he faced during his suspension and his determination to clear his name.
For Rajasthan Royals, the case adds another layer of legal entanglement to a franchise that has weathered its share of controversies since the IPL’s inception. A ruling in Sreesanth’s favour could potentially open the door for other athletes to pursue similar claims against teams or insurers.
