Smriti Irani Remarks on Rahul Gandhi’s Candidature from Raebareli

Union Minister and BJP candidate from Amethi, Smriti Irani, responded to Congress naming Rahul Gandhi as its candidate from Raebareli Lok Sabha seat, stating that it signifies the opposition’s defeat in Amethi even before the polls commence. Irani emphasized that the decision to field Rahul Gandhi elsewhere indicates a lack of confidence in winning Amethi, suggesting they’ve conceded the constituency.

Addressing reporters in Amethi, Irani welcomed the move, portraying it as a triumph for Amethi residents. She highlighted the developmental progress in Amethi over the past five years, underscoring the contrast with the Gandhi family’s tenure. Irani assured the people of Amethi of the Modi government’s commitment to continued development, positioning Rahul Gandhi’s candidature as a significant moment in electoral history.

Recalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s prediction regarding Rahul Gandhi seeking a new constituency post-elections in Kerala, Irani accused the Congress leadership of retreating from the electoral fray.

Rahul Gandhi’s contest against BJP’s Dinesh Pratap Singh in Raebareli marks a departure from his tenure representing Wayanad. Meanwhile, the Congress has nominated Kishori Lal Sharma, a loyalist, from Amethi, a seat Rahul Gandhi lost to Irani in 2019.

Kishori Lal Sharma filed his nomination from the Amethi Lok Sabha seat, where Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have had electoral prominence. Both Raebareli and Amethi are scheduled for polling in the fifth phase on May 20.

The Congress bastion of Raebareli has historical significance, with past victories by members of the Nehru-Gandhi family, including Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. The decision to field Rahul Gandhi elsewhere marks a departure from this legacy, highlighting shifting electoral dynamics.
