Sikkim Flash Flood Claims 17 Lives, Including 6 Army Jawans

A devastating flash flood triggered by a cloudburst over Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim has claimed the lives of at least 17 individuals, including six Army personnel. The catastrophe unfolded in the Teesta river basin, leaving over 90 people missing following the early morning cloudburst on Wednesday.

Here is a breakdown of the district-wise impact, as compiled by the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA):

Mangan District: In Mangan District, four lives have been tragically lost, and 17 individuals remain unaccounted for. Approximately 700 residents have been safely evacuated from the affected regions. Moreover, eight bridges have been swept away by the force of the floodwaters. Relief operations are actively underway, with 1,715 people finding shelter in various relief camps.

Gangtok District: Gangtok District has witnessed five casualties, and the search continues for 22 missing persons. Authorities have successfully evacuated 1,025 residents. Regrettably, three bridges have been washed away by the surging waters. In a manner akin to Mangan District, 1,715 people have been accommodated in relief camps.

Namchi District: Although Namchi District reports no fatalities, five individuals are currently unaccounted for. Roughly 630 residents have been evacuated from affected areas, and two bridges have succumbed to the deluge. A total of 2,107 people have found refuge in various relief camps.

Pakyong District: The most severe impact has been felt in Pakyong District, with a heartbreaking tally of 10 lives lost, including six army personnel. An alarming 59 people are still missing, while 56 individuals have been successfully evacuated from the affected zones. Thankfully, no bridges were reported washed away in this district. Relief operations have provided shelter for 2,107 people across different locations.
