Shashi Tharoor Breaks Ranks With Rahul Gandhi Over Trump Remarks

Senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor has publicly expressed a differing viewpoint from his party colleague Rahul Gandhi over the latter’s recent criticism of former U.S. President Donald Trump, suggesting that strategic discretion should guide political commentary on foreign leaders.

Rahul Gandhi, during a recent press briefing, had sharply criticized Trump’s return to prominence in U.S. politics, labeling him “a threat to democratic values globally” and warning against his potential re-election. Gandhi’s comments came in response to questions about India’s diplomatic posture in the face of rising authoritarian figures worldwide.

However, Tharoor, a seasoned diplomat and former Under-Secretary-General at the United Nations, struck a more measured tone. “We all know the complexities of international diplomacy,” he told reporters on Thursday. “While I understand the concern about global democratic backsliding, it is not in India’s interest to take overt political sides in foreign electoral matters especially with a country as important as the United States.”

Tharoor emphasized that while ideological preferences may exist, the relationship between India and the U.S. is based on long-term strategic interests that transcend individual presidencies. “India has to engage constructively with whoever occupies the White House, whether it’s a Democrat or a Republican,” he said.

His remarks highlight an emerging divergence within the Congress Party over how to approach evolving global dynamics, particularly as the 2024 U.S. presidential race intensifies and Trump remains a dominant Republican contender.

Congress insiders say Tharoor’s views are informed by his diplomatic experience and a pragmatic understanding of realpolitik. “He’s not opposing Rahul Gandhi,” one party aide explained. “He’s simply advocating for a more nuanced approach.”

BJP leaders were quick to seize on the disagreement, accusing the Congress party of sending mixed signals on foreign policy. “This shows the lack of coherence in their approach to global affairs,” said BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla.

Despite the apparent discord, both Tharoor and Gandhi remain committed to the broader Congress agenda. Tharoor clarified that his statement was not intended to undermine Gandhi’s leadership but to emphasize India’s tradition of maintaining neutrality in foreign domestic politics.

With the U.S. elections still months away, Indian political observers believe the country will continue watching developments closely but with caution. As Tharoor put it: “India’s focus must remain on strengthening its bilateral relations, not on commenting on the domestic choices of other nations.”
