CAPE TOWN – In a heartfelt celebration of the Navratri festival, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled a special ‘garba’ song he penned in honor of Goddess Durga. The song, titled “Aavati Kalay,” was shared on social media, where the Prime Minister expressed his sentiments and reverence for the Goddess during this auspicious time.
In his post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi noted, “It is the auspicious time of Navratri, and people are celebrating in different ways, united by their devotion to Maa Durga. In this spirit of reverence and joy, here is Aavati Kalay, a Garba I wrote as a tribute to Her power and grace. May Her blessings always remain upon us.”
The Prime Minister also expressed his gratitude to talented singer Purva Mantri, who delivered a soulful rendition of the song, capturing the essence of the celebration. Garba, a traditional folk dance from Gujarat, is performed as an ode to Goddess Amba, especially during the nine-night festival of Navratri. The significance of Garba was further highlighted when it was officially recognized on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Humanity in December 2023, emphasizing its global cultural importance.
In discussing the song’s themes, Mahendra Andani of the Shree Patel Ras Mandali elaborated on the deeper meaning behind the lyrics. “Modiji evokes mother nature and says, from the earth to the river and the sky, they’re all our mother, and how we must protect her. He also invites the Goddess to bless those of us performing Garba under the moon during the nine days of Navratri,” he explained.
The English translation of “Aavati Kalay” captures the essence of the song, portraying the divine connection between the worshippers and the Goddess. The lyrics express a longing for the Goddess’s presence, celebrating her nurturing role in the lives of her devotees.
Throughout the song, the lyrics emphasize themes of compassion, guidance, and the interconnectedness of nature and divinity. The chorus reverberates with joy and devotion, inviting listeners to celebrate the arrival of Jagadamba, or Mother, as a symbol of strength and benevolence.
As Navratri unfolds, PM Modi’s tribute resonates with millions, reflecting the spirit of unity and reverence that characterizes this festive season. The unveiling of “Aavati Kalay” not only enriches the cultural tapestry of the festival but also serves as a reminder of the enduring bond between nature, humanity, and the divine.
