In a recorded message at the Ministerial Meeting of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that India is the world’s fastest-growing major economy and has surpassed its Paris Climate commitments ahead of schedule. PM Modi stated that India’s talent, technology, and innovation will contribute significantly to the IEA’s objectives.

PM Modi highlighted India’s remarkable economic growth, stating that it transitioned from the 11th largest economy to the fifth largest within a decade. He pointed out that in the same period, India’s solar energy capacity increased 26-fold, and renewable energy capacity doubled, surpassing Paris commitments before the set timelines.

Despite being home to 17% of the world’s population, India’s carbon emissions account for only 4% of the global total, PM Modi mentioned. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to combat climate change, expressing gratitude to the IEA for its support of India’s initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance and Our Mission LiFE, focusing on pro-planet lifestyle choices.

PM Modi stressed the importance of inclusivity in enhancing the credibility and capability of institutions, noting that India brings talent, technology, innovation, scale, speed, quantity, and quality to every mission. He also thanked the IEA for supporting the Global Biofuels Alliance initiative launched during India’s G20 Presidency.

The IEA’s 2024 Ministerial Meeting, taking place in Paris, gathers energy and climate ministers from around the world to assess developments in energy markets, policies, and transitions. It marks the 50th Anniversary of the IEA and provides a platform to discuss global energy system changes and address current challenges in energy markets and clean energy transitions.
