PM Modi Commends Bhutan King’s Leadership, Pledges Enhanced Bilateral Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the leadership of Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck on Friday, highlighting his efforts in advancing Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage with a modern outlook.

Addressing a gathering in Thimphu, PM Modi remarked, “Your Majesty, you are steering Bhutan’s rich cultural legacy with a contemporary vision. Your initiatives are fostering innovation and inner happiness in Bhutan.”

PM Modi also commended Bhutan for its contributions to global well-being, noting, “Bhutan introduced the concept of ‘Gross National Happiness’ to the world. I am confident that Bhutan’s ‘Mindfulness City’ will serve as a global inspiration.”

Highlighting Bhutan’s strides towards environmental sustainability, PM Modi emphasized, “Amid the global challenge of Climate Change, Bhutan’s commendable progress towards achieving ‘Carbon Neutral’ status sets a remarkable example.”

Discussing the shared aspirations of Indian and Bhutanese youth, PM Modi affirmed, “The aspirations of the youth in India and Bhutan are aligned. India aims to become a Developed Nation by 2047, while Bhutan targets achieving ‘High-income’ status by 2034. In our pursuit of common objectives, India stands firmly with Bhutan, promoting ‘Brand Bhutan’ and fostering belief in its potential.”

Looking ahead, PM Modi expressed optimism about strengthening bilateral relations in various sectors. “The next five years will invigorate our ties. We will focus on enhancing connectivity, infrastructure, trade, and energy cooperation,” he affirmed.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi was conferred with the prestigious ‘Order of the Druk Gyalpo’ by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, underscoring the deep bond between India and Bhutan.

During their meeting, PM Modi and King Wangchuck reaffirmed their commitment to further elevating the special ties shared by the two countries. They reviewed bilateral relations and explored avenues for deeper cooperation.

Expressing delight over PM Modi’s visit, King Wangchuck highlighted the significance of India’s global responsibilities and underscored the enduring partnership between Bhutan and India. He emphasized Bhutan’s support for India’s progress and prosperity, emphasizing the mutual benefits derived from a successful India.
