The Ghosi assembly bye-election in Uttar Pradesh, along with bye-elections in six other assembly constituencies across several states, began with a 20% voter turnout recorded until 11 am, as reported by the Election Commission of India.
The bye-elections in various states, including Uttarakhand, Kerala, Tripura, West Bengal, and Jharkhand, commenced at 7 am and are scheduled to continue until 5 pm. The Election Commission will release the results on Friday, September 8.
This election marks the first contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the newly formed Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc of the opposition.
The bye-elections were necessitated in five states due to the deaths of sitting MLAs, while two other MLAs resigned from their posts. In Uttar Pradesh’s Ghosi, the bye-election occurred due to the reelection of Dara Singh Chauhan as a Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA, which was followed by his defection to the BJP. Chauhan is now contesting the Ghosi bye-election as a BJP candidate against the SP’s Sudhakar Singh.
Other constituencies witnessing bye-elections include Puthupally in Kerala, Dhupguri in West Bengal, Dumri in Jharkhand, and Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar, Boxanagar, and Dhanpur in Tripura, with candidates from various parties vying for these seats.
