In a significant development, six additional individuals were apprehended on Wednesday morning in connection with the tragic death of a student at Jadavpur University. This brings the total number of arrests in the case to nine, as confirmed by the police.
Kolkata Police deployed multiple teams for overnight operations, resulting in the apprehension of four suspects. Among those arrested are Md. Arif, a third-year Civil Engineering student at Jadavpur University; Md. Asif Azmal, a fourth-year Electrical Engineering student; and Ankan Sardar, a third-year Civil Engineering student.
Simultaneously, Kolkata Police conducted raids in Purbo Medinipur and South 24 Parganas to capture three more accused individuals who had fled after the incident. These apprehended suspects were identified as Asit Sardar and Saptak Kamilya, former students of Jadavpur University, and Suman Naskar, another former student.
All six detainees were produced before the court on Wednesday. Furthermore, the Dean of Students and Registrar of Jadavpur University have been summoned to meet the Joint CP Crime at Lalbazar, underlining the ongoing investigation’s intensity.
The incident, which occurred on August 10, involved the death of Swarnodip Kundu, a first-year student in the Bengali Department. Kundu tragically fell from a hostel balcony on the night of August 9. Despite efforts to save him, he passed away while undergoing treatment at KPC Hospital in Jadavpur.
Earlier arrests included Deepsekhar Dutta, a second-year Economics student, and Manotosh Ghosh, a second-year Sociology student, both residents of different districts. Sourav Chowdhury, an ex-student of the university, was also taken into custody and remanded in police custody.
As investigations continue, the arrests shed light on the circumstances surrounding the student’s unfortunate demise and reflect the authorities’ commitment to seeking justice in this case.
