Mohammad Hafeez Praises Shubman Gill: ‘He’s Been Trying to Be the Next Virat Kohli’

Former Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez has lauded Indian opener Shubman Gill, stating that the young batter has been striving to carry forward Virat Kohli’s run-scoring legacy in the Indian team. Hafeez’s remarks came after Gill’s match-winning century against Bangladesh in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Gill, who entered the tournament following a stellar performance in the recent ODI series against England, continued his fine form with an unbeaten 101-run knock, guiding India to a six-wicket victory.

“For the past three years, since Shubman Gill joined the Indian side, he has been trying to be the next Virat Kohli. He is taking that legacy forward,” Hafeez said on Game On Hai.

Despite registering one of his slowest ODI centuries, Hafeez commended Gill for adapting to the situation, demonstrating maturity beyond his years.

“It was his eighth ODI hundred, but what impressed me was how he played according to the situation. He changed his natural attacking style and instead focused on ensuring a match-winning performance,” Hafeez added.

Gill himself acknowledged the significance of his knock, calling it “one of the most satisfying innings” of his career.

Hafeez emphasized Gill’s ability to handle pressure and his growing stature as a player who thrives on the big stage.

“He knows when to attack and when to absorb pressure. At just 25, he is controlling games with great composure, taking responsibility, and finishing matches for India,” he remarked.

Gill’s measured century helped India chase down Bangladesh’s target of 230 on a sluggish track, finishing at 231/4 in the 47th over. His innings, marked more by patience than flair, once again cemented his position as the world’s No. 1 ODI batter.

With this victory, India now turns its focus to the highly anticipated clash against Pakistan on Sunday, February 23. Gill previously scored a fluent 58 off 52 balls against Pakistan in the 2023 Asia Cup and will be looking to make an impact once again.
