Mahatma Gandhi’s Great-Grandson Detained by Mumbai Police en route to ‘Quit India’ Commemoration”

In a noteworthy incident on Wednesday, Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson was reportedly detained by Mumbai police as he made his way to mark the ‘Quit India’ day at the August Kranti ground in the city.

The detainment occurred at the Santa Cruz police station, according to Gandhi, who shared his experience on social media. He highlighted the historical significance of the moment, stating, “For the first time in the history of independent India, I have been detained at Santa Cruz Police Station as I left home to commemorate 9th August Quit India Day. I am proud My Great Grandparents Bapu and Ba had also been arrested by the British Police on that historic date.”

However, later on, Gandhi informed his followers that he was being allowed to proceed and was heading to the August Kranti Maidan for the commemoration event, concluding his tweet with the slogan “Inquilab Zindabad!”

The ‘Quit India’ movement, initiated in August 1942 as a protest against British colonial rule, holds significant importance in India’s struggle for independence.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra NCP President Jayant Patil also commented on the day’s events. He emphasized the continued importance of preserving democracy and stated, “Today is an important day… There is still hope that today if anyone does anything against democracy, the people of the country would come together and raise the same slogan.”

Regarding the detention of Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, Patil expressed his concern about the situation, drawing parallels to the historical context. He questioned whether the circumstances are reminiscent of the colonial era and why such an incident occurred.

This incident highlights the ongoing resonance of historical movements and their impact on contemporary events, underscoring the continuing relevance of activism and the safeguarding of democratic values.
