Indian security forces have announced the killing of two suspected militants believed to be responsible for the recent deadly attack on tourists in the conflict-hit region of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to officials, the operation took place in the southern district of Kulgam late Monday night, days after the militants opened fire on a group of tourists in the Anantnag district, resulting in the death of one tourist and injuries to several others. The victims were part of a group visiting from India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu.
“The two terrorists killed in the encounter were directly involved in the attack on tourists,” said a senior police official in a statement. “Their elimination marks a significant breakthrough in our efforts to restore safety and confidence in the region.”
The military operation, which lasted several hours, reportedly involved a joint team of the Indian Army, local police, and paramilitary forces. Arms and ammunition were recovered from the scene.
This latest development comes amid renewed efforts by Indian authorities to promote tourism in Kashmir, long plagued by a separatist insurgency and geopolitical tensions. The government has invested heavily in infrastructure and security to attract visitors to the region, often referred to as “Paradise on Earth.”
However, militant groups have continued to target civilians and tourists in sporadic attacks, attempting to derail peace initiatives.
India accuses Pakistan of supporting these groups, a charge Islamabad denies, claiming it only offers moral and diplomatic support to Kashmiris seeking self-determination.
The resurgence of violence has raised concerns among local businesses and tour operators, who had seen a promising uptick in travel bookings during the summer months.
Authorities have vowed to enhance security in tourist zones and maintain pressure on armed groups operating in the region. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the slain militants were affiliated with any cross-border organizations.
The bodies of the militants have been sent for identification, and officials say further arrests are possible as the counter-terror operation expands.
Despite the threats, the Indian government has urged travelers not to panic and reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order in Jammu and Kashmir.
