States and UTs Gear Up for Implementation of New Criminal Laws from July 1
As India prepares for the rollout of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) on July 1, significant strides have been made in readiness across law enforcement and judicial sectors nationwide.
Over 5.65 lakh officials encompassing police, prison, forensic, judicial, and prosecution domains have undergone comprehensive training to acquaint themselves with the intricacies of the new criminal laws. This extensive training aims to ensure a smooth transition and effective implementation of the revamped legal framework.
In addition to the training of officials, close to 40 lakh grassroots-level functionaries have actively participated in webinars organized by various ministries. These initiatives are crucial in enhancing public awareness about the implications of the new laws, thereby empowering citizens with knowledge about their rights and responsibilities under the updated legal regime.
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has played a pivotal role by providing technical assistance to states and Union territories (UTs). This support includes the deployment of 36 dedicated support teams and call centers to facilitate ongoing reviews and provide necessary guidance to ensure the seamless adoption of the new criminal laws.
“The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has initiated several proactive measures following the notification of the new laws to ensure their effective implementation and widespread awareness among stakeholders,” shared an anonymous officer involved in the process. Emphasizing the integration of technology into investigation, trial, and court proceedings, the NCRB has implemented 23 functional upgrades in the existing Crime and Criminal Tracking Networks and Systems (CCTNS) application.
As India gears up for this significant legal transition, the coordinated efforts between government agencies, law enforcement bodies, and public participation are crucial in achieving the overarching goal of justice and security for all citizens.
