Guwahati Police Lodge FIR Against Rahul Gandhi for Alleged Assault During Congress’ Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra

Guwahati City Police have taken suo-moto action by filing a First Information Report (FIR) against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, citing charges of assault on government servants during the Congress’ Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Guwahati on January 23. The press release from the Guwahati Police Commissionerate outlined charges such as disobedience to legal orders, violation of permission conditions, and obstruction of government servants discharging lawful duties.

The Congress had organized the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ from Meghalaya to Kamrup (rural) through Guwahati city, with permission granted to follow a specified route. Security measures were in place considering Rahul Gandhi’s Z+ ASL CRPF Protectee status. Despite approval during an Advance Security Liaison (ASL) meeting, the Yatra deviated from the agreed-upon route near Khanapara Traffic point, leading to a change in course towards GS Road in Guwahati city.

The release stated that Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, allegedly instigated the crowd, leading to violence and unruly behavior. Despite advisories from senior police officers to adhere to the designated route, the crowd, led by Congress leaders, forcefully changed the course, breaking barricades and assaulting police personnel. The FIR includes charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.

An investigation is underway, focusing on the events that transpired during the Yatra and the alleged assault on police personnel.
