Kolkata: The West Bengal health department has confirmed that two youths, aged 10 and 17, have succumbed to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in the state. The rare neurological disorder, which can cause paralysis and life-threatening complications, is also suspected to have caused the deaths of a 48-year-old man and another 17-year-old youth in West Bengal.
According to sources, the 10-year-old victim was a resident of Jagatdal, North 24 Parganas, and had been undergoing treatment at BC Roy Hospital in Kolkata for a week before passing away on Sunday.
Additionally, a 48-year-old man from Dhaniakhali, Hooghly, is suspected to have died from the syndrome on Wednesday.
Other Cases Under Treatment
Health officials have also reported that two more children diagnosed with GBS in the state are currently on ventilator support.
What is Guillain-Barré Syndrome?
Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a rare autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, and, in severe cases, respiratory failure.
Possible Causes & Concerns:
- GBS is often triggered by viral or bacterial infections, including respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses.
- Some cases have been linked to previous dengue and influenza infections.
- The health department is investigating whether any viral outbreaks in West Bengal may have triggered these cases.
Government Response
State health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised increased surveillance for early detection and treatment of GBS cases. Hospitals have been alerted to provide critical care support for affected patients.
More details are expected as investigations continue.
