Singer Maithili Thakur, a celebrated folk and devotional artist from Bihar, has formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) just weeks before the state’s pivotal 2025 Assembly elections. \
The induction took place in Patna, in the presence of senior BJP leaders including state chief Dilip Jaiswal. Sources suggest she may be fielded from the Alinagar constituency in Darbhanga, with speculation also around her possible contest from her home area of Madhubani.
Thakur, aged 25, comes with a strong folk music background, having been awarded the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2021. Prior to this move, she had already served as a “State Icon” for Bihar and expressed a desire to contribute to her home district’s development.
In statements, Thakur emphasized that her goal is “service” rather than contesting, and that she would follow party direction regarding her political role.
Analysis & Implications:
- The BJP’s decision to rope in Maithili Thakur is likely strategic, aiming to broaden its appeal by leveraging her cultural cachet and regional roots. Her entry may help the party strengthen its reach in Mithila, especially among youth and folk tradition enthusiasts.
- Whether Thakur will secure a ticket and from which constituency remains under speculation. If fielded, her candidacy could change dynamics in Darbhanga or Madhubani, depending on where the BJP positions her.
- Her move underscores a growing trend where cultural figures are becoming key political assets, especially in states like Bihar where regional identity, language, and tradition remain powerful political variables.
