in a groundbreaking initiative unveiled on International Migrants Day, African nurses and midwives have launched what is being described as the world’s first global artificial intelligence (AI) empowerment movement for women and migrant professionals.
The campaign titled “Leave No Woman Behind: Global AI Literacy and Empowerment” aims to equip one million women, nurses, and girls with AI literacy and leadership skills by 2030. The initiative seeks to close gender gaps in technology and ensure that women, particularly in health and migration sectors, are not left behind in the digital revolution.

Transforming Migration Through Digital Empowerment
Unveiled via a virtual summit and three-day bootcamp, the campaign connects participants from healthcare, education, business, and public policy with global experts in AI and technology across five continents.
According to the organisers, the project reframes migration “from a story of departure to one of digital empowerment.”
“AI must not become another tool of exclusion. It must be the new language of inclusion,” said Professor Khadijat Toyin Musah, Founder and Executive Director of the Global Institute of Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals (GiNMAHP) and one of the campaign’s co-conveners.
Breaking Barriers in Gender and Tech
The initiative comes amid growing concern about gender disparity in technology. According to the World Economic Forum (2023), nearly half of all job skills will be disrupted by AI before 2027. Yet, UNESCO data show that only 22% of AI professionals globally are women.
“These numbers are not just statistics; they are barriers waiting to be broken,” Musah said.
A New Kind of Migration
For Josiah-Jackson Okesola (JayJay), Co-Founder of TechNurses Africa and co-convener of the campaign, digital literacy represents a new form of mobility.
Global Launch and Partnerships
The virtual launch event features keynote addresses from AI and gender-equality advocates, storytelling sessions from migrant innovators, and the unveiling of the World’s First AI Innovation Hub for Migrant Nurses and Women.
Organisers are calling for partnerships from governments, universities, NGOs, and corporate institutions to expand the program’s reach. The campaign aligns with the WHO Global Strategy on Digital Health (2020–2025) and several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including gender equality and innovation.
“Empowering women with AI literacy is not charity; it is economic justice,” Musah said. “When women understand and build technology, nations grow smarter, healthier, and more equal.”
About the Organisers
TechNurses Africa is a Pan-African movement that empowers nurses, midwives, and women in healthcare to lead digital transformation and develop AI-driven solutions.
GiNMAHP (Global Institute of Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals) connects health professionals and diaspora networks to promote research, innovation, and gender equity in health systems.
Together, the two organisations envision a future where African women lead the next frontier of digital and AI innovation.
