Election Commission Adjusts Vote Counting Date for Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim Assembly Polls

The Election Commission announced on Sunday a modification in the vote counting schedule for the assembly polls in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, shifting the date from June 4 to June 2.

This decision comes in response to the imperative to conclude elections before the expiration of the term of the two Assemblies, which is slated for June 2, as clarified by the EC in a press release.

In exercising its authority under Article 324 read with Article 172(1) of the Constitution of India and Section 15 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the EC emphasized the necessity to conduct elections for the Legislative Assemblies of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim before the end of their respective terms.

“The Election Commission is mandated to organize elections to the Legislative Assemblies of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim before the culmination of their tenures, as per the stipulations outlined in the Constitution of India and the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Both the Legislative Assemblies of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim are set to conclude their terms on 02.06.2024,” the EC stated in its press release.

Alongside the adjustment of the vote counting date to June 2, the deadline for completing the election process was also brought forward to the same date from the previously scheduled June 6. These amendments align with the polling date set for April 19 in both states.

“The schedule for Parliamentary Constituencies of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim remains unchanged,” the EC clarified. Vote counting for the Lok Sabha seats, as well as the assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, will proceed as originally planned on June 4. The term of the Lok Sabha extends until June 16.
