New Delhi — A 26-year-old woman was arrested by Delhi Police on Wednesday for allegedly impersonating and cyberstalking another woman in an attempt to prevent her from communicating with her husband, officials confirmed.
According to police, the accused, a postgraduate in arts and currently a homemaker, married her husband in 2023. The investigation revealed that she became suspicious after seeing a photograph of her husband with the complainant, a 30-year-old private firm employee. Acting on her suspicion, she reportedly accessed her husband’s mobile phone without his knowledge and sent inappropriate messages to the complainant via Instagram, prompting the woman to block the man’s account.
However, police said the accused’s actions escalated further. “She was not satisfied even after the victim blocked her husband,” said DCP (North) Raja Banthia. “She then created a fake Instagram profile in the victim’s name and used it to contact the victim’s friends and colleagues to gather more personal information and images.”
The accused allegedly stalked the woman for over six months, collecting photos from social media and editing them before uploading them on the fake account. Her intent, police said, was to impersonate the victim and monitor whether her husband attempted to reconnect by sending friend requests or messages.
Police traced the accused by tracking the SIM card used to operate the fake social media account. She was arrested from her residence in Ghazipur. During interrogation, she reportedly admitted to her actions, stating her motive was to ensure her husband cut ties with the victim.
Investigators clarified that the accused’s husband had no knowledge of her actions. The case highlights growing concerns over online impersonation and harassment, particularly involving personal relationships and digital privacy.
The accused is currently in custody, and further legal proceedings are underway.
