Delhi, India — Delhi Metro services on the Blue Line faced disruptions on Thursday, December 5, after a cable theft between the Moti Nagar and Kirti Nagar stations. The theft, which involved signalling cables, led to significant delays on the metro line, particularly during peak office hours.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) confirmed the issue on its official social media platform, X, advising passengers to anticipate longer travel times. “There is a delay in services on the Blue Line due to a cable theft between Moti Nagar and Kirti Nagar. The inconvenience is regretted,” the DMRC post stated.
The theft damaged the metro line’s signalling system, causing trains to operate at slower speeds, which resulted in delays. However, services on other sections of the Blue Line were unaffected. In response to the incident, DMRC announced that repair work would commence at 12:45 PM, with single-line operations between Subhash Nagar and Kirti Nagar to ensure minimal disruption.
“Delhi Metro shall make an attempt to repair the impacted section from 12:45 PM onwards,” the DMRC update read. “During this period, single-line operation will be done between Subhash Nagar and Kirti Nagar. If the repairs take longer, work will continue at night after passenger services end.”
The Blue Line, which connects Dwarka Sector 21 to Noida Electronic City/Vaishali, is one of the busiest routes in Delhi, linking major areas like Rajiv Chowk, Yamuna Bank, and Mayur Vihar Phase 1. The disruption impacted many commuters, particularly during morning office hours.
In response to the incident, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the theft, calling attention to the growing security concerns in the city. “Amit Shah ji, what is happening in Delhi? Even the cable of Delhi Metro has been stolen. Nothing is safe. Do something,” Kejriwal wrote on X.
DMRC has assured passengers of continuous updates as repair work progresses.
