Danish Kaneria Criticizes Pakistan’s Team Selection and Spin Strategy Ahead of Champions Trophy

Lahore, Pakistan: Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has strongly criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and team management for their lack of innovation in squad selection and ineffective use of spin bowlers. He warned that Pakistan’s current approach could prove costly, particularly in high-profile matches like the upcoming Champions Trophy clash against India.

Kaneria expressed concern that Pakistan appears more focused on hosting the Champions Trophy than on building a competitive team. He pointed out that the squad lacks quality spinners, with Abrar Ahmed being the only specialist, while part-timers like Khushdil Shah and Salman Agha are expected to fill the gap. The former leg-spinner emphasized the importance of a skilled left-arm spinner, citing India’s Kuldeep Yadav as an example. He referenced Yadav’s recent dismissal of Salman Agha with a deceptive googly, highlighting the impact a quality spinner can have in crucial encounters.

Pakistan’s struggles in the tournament opener—a 60-run defeat against New Zealand—further fueled Kaneria’s criticism. He questioned the mindset of key players, including captain Babar Azam, whom he accused of prioritizing personal milestones over team success.

“Babar Azam plays for himself rather than the team. Pakistan is not ready to face India with this approach,” Kaneria reportedly said.

He also expressed doubts about Pakistan’s ability to counter India’s superior spin attack, given the team’s historical struggles against quality spinners. With India boasting an in-form spin department, Kaneria urged the PCB to rethink its selection strategies and invest in developing more versatile players.

As Pakistan prepares for a crucial clash against India, Kaneria’s remarks highlight growing concerns over the team’s tactical limitations and the need for a more aggressive and forward-thinking approach in international cricket.
