Clashes Erupt at Hindu Temple in Brampton Amid Khalistani Protest, Prompting Condemnation from Canadian Leaders

Brampton, ON – Tensions flared over the weekend as protesters carrying Khalistani flags clashed with individuals at the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton, drawing condemnation from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trudeau emphasized the importance of religious freedom in his response, stating that “every Canadian has the right to practice their faith freely and safely.”

On Sunday, Peel Regional Police reported that a protest occurred at the Hindu Sabha Mandir, where unverified social media videos showed demonstrators with banners supporting Khalistan amidst chaotic scenes involving fistfights and individuals striking each other with poles.

Trudeau took to X (formerly Twitter) to commend local authorities for their rapid response to the violent incident. “The acts of violence at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton today are unacceptable,” he wrote. “Thank you to the Peel Regional Police for swiftly responding to protect the community and investigate this incident.”

The High Commission of India in Ottawa also issued a strong statement condemning the violence, labeling the protesters as “anti-India” elements. The clash occurred during a consular event co-organized by the Hindu Sabha Mandir and the Indian consulate. In its statement, the High Commission remarked, “We have seen violent disruption today (November 3), orchestrated by anti-India elements outside the consular camp co-organised with the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton.”

Peel Regional Police confirmed that they were aware of the protest and had increased their presence at the temple to maintain order. Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah stated on X, “We respect the right to protest in a peaceful and safe manner but will not tolerate violence and criminal acts. Those that do participate in this activity will be pursued, arrested, and charged.” However, police indicated that no arrests were made during the incident.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown also condemned the violence, asserting that those responsible should face the full extent of the law. “Religious freedom is a foundational value in Canada. Everyone should feel safe in their place of worship,” he stated.

Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre labeled the violence as “completely unacceptable,” affirming that all Canadians should be free to practice their faith peacefully. “Conservatives condemn this violence unequivocally,” he posted on X.

Premier Doug Ford praised the police for their quick response, declaring that the incident was “completely unacceptable” and must be condemned, adding, “No one should feel unsafe at their place of worship.”

The clash in Brampton highlights ongoing tensions between Canada and India, which have been strained since Trudeau’s allegations last September of a “potential” involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistan extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. New Delhi dismissed Trudeau’s charges as “absurd,” asserting that Canada has provided a safe haven for pro-Khalistan elements operating with impunity.

As the situation continues to unfold, the incident raises significant concerns about community safety and the challenges of maintaining peace amidst rising tensions related to issues of nationalism and religious freedom.
