Chhattisgarh IED Attack: Eight Security Personnel and Driver Killed in Bijapur

Eight members of the District Reserve Guard (DRG), a specialized anti-Naxalite unit, and a civilian driver were killed on Monday when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district. The incident occurred around 2:15 pm near Ambeli village as the team was returning from an operation, according to Bastar Range Inspector General of Police Sunderaj P.

Details of the Attack

The explosion targeted the DRG personnel’s vehicle, marking the deadliest assault on security forces in the region in nearly two years. Reinforcements have since been dispatched to the site, and additional personnel are conducting a combing operation in the vicinity.

“The identification of the deceased is ongoing,” said Inspector General Sunderaj P, adding that further details would be shared as they emerge.

Previous Attacks in the Region

This attack echoes a similar tragedy on April 26, 2023, when 10 security personnel and a civilian driver were killed in an IED blast carried out by Maoists in the Dantewada district. Chhattisgarh has long been a hotspot for Left-Wing Extremism (LWE), with security forces often targeted in ambushes and bomb attacks.

Government Response

The incident underscores the persistent challenges of combating Maoist insurgency in Chhattisgarh. Authorities have pledged to intensify operations against insurgents and strengthen security measures in the affected areas.

The loss of lives highlights the risks faced by security personnel in the region. Further updates on the investigation and government response are expected as the situation unfolds.
