Ahead of the funeral of the legendary singer Pankaj Udhas, numerous celebrities visited his residence in Mumbai to express condolences to the grieving family. Renowned musicians Shankar Mahadevan and Ustad Zakir Hussain were among those seen arriving at the late singer’s house. Pankaj Udhas passed away on February 26 after battling a prolonged illness.
Reflecting on the Ghazal maestro, Shankar Mahadevan shared, “He had a positive approach towards everything in life. May God give his family abundant strength to bear this big loss. I am in a state of shock.”
Padma Shri recipient Pankaj Udhas, aged 72, breathed his last on Monday. The family confirmed the news through a statement, saying, “With profound sadness, we inform you of the passing of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on February 26th due to a prolonged illness. — The Udhas Family.”
Born on May 17, 1951, in Jetpur, Gujarat, Pankaj Udhas gained fame not only for his ghazals but also for his contributions to the film industry. His solo ghazal album ‘Aahat’ in 1980 marked the beginning of widespread popularity. Subsequent successes included albums like ‘Mukarar’ (1981), ‘Tarrannum’ (1982), ‘Mehfil’ (1983), and more.
Some of his well-loved renditions include ‘Chitthi Aayi Hai,’ ‘Chandani Raat Mein,’ ‘Na Kajre Ki Dhaar,’ ‘Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein,’ ‘Ek Taraf Uska Ghar,’ and ‘Thodi Thodi Piya Karo.’
Following the news of his demise, fans and members of the music and film industry paid emotional tributes on social media. Veteran actor Anupam Kher, in a video message, expressed sorrow, remembering the singer’s melodious voice and shared memories. He concluded with a reference to Udhas’ popular song, saying, “Ab chitti nahi aayegi” (The letters won’t come anymore), emphasizing the loss of a cherished personality.
