The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case of disproportionate assets against Deepak Chandra, senior passport superintendent at the regional passport office in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, a spokesperson confirmed on Monday.
CBI Raids and Seizures
The CBI conducted searches at three locations linked to Chandra:
- Two premises in Ghaziabad (residential and official)
- One location in Patna
These raids led to the recovery of:
- ₹60 lakh in cash
- Documents related to bank deposits, sale deeds, mutual fund investments, life insurance policies, and vehicle registration certificates
Allegations of Illicit Wealth
According to the First Information Report (FIR), Chandra allegedly accumulated unexplained wealth while holding various positions in the passport office:
- Assistant passport superintendent
- Passport superintendent
- Senior passport superintendent
The period under investigation spans from July 30, 2018, to September 30, 2024.
The CBI’s preliminary findings indicate that Chandra amassed assets worth ₹85.06 lakh, which is 146.43% more than his legitimate income, and which he cannot satisfactorily account for.
Ongoing Investigation
The CBI has stated that further investigations are underway to trace additional assets and uncover potential collaborators involved in the case.
