Kolkata– In a tragic incident on Sunday morning, a Bengali television director was arrested after allegedly ramming his car into pedestrians while driving under the influence of alcohol in Thakurpukur, Kolkata. The crash led to the death of one man and left seven others seriously injured.
The accused, Siddhanta Das (45), a well-known television director, was reportedly intoxicated when the accident took place in the Thakurpukur market area on Diamond Harbour Road around 9 am. Das, driving a hatchback, violated traffic regulations by entering a portion of the road under repair. After crashing into steel barricades, the car continued on its path, hitting several pedestrians and two motorcyclists before screeching to a halt.
Casualties and Injuries
According to police, Aminul Rehman, one of the pedestrians, succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital, while Joydeb Majumdar, another pedestrian, is currently undergoing treatment for serious injuries. Six other victims sustained injuries but were released after medical treatment, as their conditions were not life-threatening.
Arrest and Charges
The police swiftly arrested Das and impounded his vehicle. He has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash and negligent driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol. An official from the Kolkata Police stated that Das was allegedly drunk when he was involved in the accident.
Investigation and Background
Further investigation revealed that the director had attended a late-night party with actors and technicians from his new TV serial. It is suspected that Das was under the influence of alcohol when he got behind the wheel the following morning.
The police are continuing their investigation and have confirmed that Das will be produced in court soon.
