Beloved ‘Candid Judge’ Frank Caprio’s Emotional Call for Prayers Resonates Worldwide

Frank Caprio, the retired Rhode Island judge whose compassionate courtroom moments made him a viral sensation, has touched millions again this time with a heartfelt plea for prayers as he faces a personal health battle.

Caprio, 87, revealed in a recent video that he has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing treatment. In the emotional message, posted to social media, the former Providence chief judge asked supporters not for sympathy but for prayers. “I would ask each of you, in your own way, to please think of me in your prayers,” he said. “That would be the greatest gift you could give me.”

The clip quickly spread across platforms, drawing an outpouring of support from admirers across the United States and abroad. Thousands of messages have poured in, praising Caprio for his humility, kindness, and the compassion he showed defendants during his years on the bench.

Often referred to as “America’s nicest judge,” Caprio rose to international fame through the television program Caught in Providence, which featured his unconventional yet empathetic approach to justice. Clips of his rulings often balancing the law with humanity, especially toward struggling families—went viral, earning him millions of fans.

Political leaders, celebrities, and everyday citizens have joined in offering well-wishes. Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee called Caprio “a treasure to our state and to the nation,” while television personality Steve Harvey said in a post that Caprio “showed the world that kindness and fairness can live inside the courtroom.”

Caprio’s family has also spoken publicly, thanking people for their messages. His son, lawyer Frank Caprio Jr., said: “Our father has always believed in the power of faith and community. The prayers and support mean more than words can express.”

Despite his illness, Caprio’s message carried the same warmth that endeared him to so many. “I love people, I love this country, and I’m grateful for the wonderful life I’ve lived,” he said in the video. “Now, I humbly ask for your prayers as I face this challenge.”

For many who followed his career, the judge’s appeal is a reminder of the human connection he so often emphasized in his courtroom. As one supporter wrote on social media: “He gave compassion to so many strangers now the world is sending it back to him.”
