An American Airlines flight traveling from New York to Delhi was forced to divert to Rome on Sunday after receiving an email bomb threat mid-flight.
Flight AA 292, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, had departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport on February 22 and was en route to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. The aircraft had crossed the Caspian Sea when it abruptly altered course and turned back toward Europe following the security alert.
The airline confirmed the diversion in a statement, stating, “AA 292, which was flying from New York to Delhi, has been diverted to Rome because of a possible security threat on board.”
Upon landing in Rome, the aircraft was subjected to a full security screening by local authorities. The flight is expected to resume its journey to Delhi once it receives clearance.
American Airlines assured passengers and the public that it is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with local law enforcement agencies. No further details about the nature of the threat have been disclosed at this time.
