In a significant development, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was suspended from the Lok Sabha on Thursday due to “deliberate and repeated misconduct.” The matter has been subsequently referred to the Privileges Committee for further examination.
The motion for Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s suspension, presented by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, highlighted the gravity of the situation. “This House, having taken serious note of the gross, deliberate, and repeated misconduct of Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in utter disregard to the House and authority of the Chair, resolves that the matter of his misconduct be referred to the Committee of Privileges of the House for further investigation and reporting to the House. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is to be suspended from the service of the House until the Committee submits its report,” Joshi stated.
The resolution was adopted by the House through a voice vote.
Earlier in the day, certain remarks made by Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury concerning Prime Minister Narendra Modi were expunged from the parliamentary records. Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly objected to Chowdhury’s comments. Pralhad Joshi invoked a point of order, urging Chowdhury to apologize for his remarks.
Following the debate on a no-confidence motion, which was ultimately defeated, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha highlighted the conduct of both BJP member Virendra Awasthi and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, stating that their behavior had deviated from the decorum expected within the House. Virendra Awasthi expressed his apology for his actions and cited an inability to tolerate disparaging remarks against the Prime Minister.
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s suspension from the Lok Sabha and the subsequent referral of the matter to the Privileges Committee underscore the gravity of the situation and the commitment of the House to uphold its decorum and standards of conduct. The decision comes in the wake of a broader context of parliamentary proceedings and reflects the House’s dedication to maintaining a respectful and dignified environment for deliberation and debate.
